ShawlsOnce the Barabaig women made their first shawl, they were
inspired to learn how to say beautiful in English. Just as
we call them 'Amias' (meaning beautiful in the language of
the Barabaig) the shawls are now known among the
Barabaig women as truly 'bootifl'. Each shawl is its own
work of art, skillfully crafted by hand. They are as 'bootifl' on the wall as they
are on the body and are striking on bare skin. This is a
piece that will turn heads at any soiree.
Barabaig leather fringe is just as much a product of
mastery as their beadwork. The leather is carefully cut
by hand with a knife over the base of a gourd. And, the
beaded color combinations on the shawls have special
meaning to the Barabaig. Each color combination refer to
Barabaig spiritual colors or to a specific Barabaig
clan, each having their own special skills and powers.
