WrapThe Barabaig women, having learned to say “bootifl” in
English, were moved to wrap the shawl around their waists
and dance around the room. They loved the way the beads
moved and jingled, keeping rhythm with their singing.
And so the wrap was born. It will add style to any outfit,
from jeans and leggings to skirts and dresses. Can also be
worn as a swimsuit cover up.
Barabaig leather fringe is just as much a product of
mastery as their bead work. The leather is carefully cut
by hand with a knife over the base of a gourd. And, the
beaded color combinations on the wraps have special
meaning to the Barabaig. They are Barabaig spiritual
colors or Barabaig clan colors, each having their own
special skills and powers.
